Rick and Dave grew up playing with toy cars, riding tricycles and bicycles, and playing with other kids’ vehicles. Eventually Dad bought a go-kart frame, and in the garden offseason, took the engine off our roto-tiller and adapted it to make that go-kart serious fun. He made a track in our pasture, and we were hooked for life. Next came a Honda 50 mini-bike, which we took with us when we moved to Kenya, East Africa. We upgraded to a Suzuki TC 90 and Suzuki TS 100, and started racing motocross in the trailbike class. More upgrades to a bigger Honda, a Yamaha DT 175, a Honda XL 175, and a Suzuki TS 185 kept us having serious fun in the late 70s and early 80s, winning some races, and getting in the Kenya newspapers regularly as teenagers. We came back to the US for college and raced motocross a little, but soon turned to rally, as we’d always wanted.
